Brief 2009 Hakalau Forest NWR Open House Report What a wet & wonderful day it was at Hakalau Forest's Open House Saturday October 17th 2009. Approximately 300 persons came to the Pua Akala Tract and those that went birding had the opportunity for exceptional sightings of all the endangered forest birds of Hakalau Forest, the Akepa, Hawai'i Creeper & Akiapola'au as well as other beautiful native forest birds. At the Hakalau Tract almost 200 people came to tour the Greenhouse and many walked the 1/2 mile Interpretive Trail that meanders along the Hakalau Gulch where one often sees I'iwi and apapane flit overhead and amakihi or elepaio in the old grow Koa and Ohia. Our Friends tent at Pua Akala had posters of our Greenhouse Water Tank Fundraiser and to increase awareness, we gave bottled water for a donation to the Water Tank Fund-what a wonderful success with donations totaling $163. At our Friends table we sold our very first Friends' tee shirts (a total of 50 sold) as well as Friends' bandanas (27) and sold out of the Hawaii Bird Guide. You can still purchase a tee shirt or bandana by going to our web site, www.friendsofhakalauforest.org and clicking “Additional Information”. Many thanks to all of you that stopped by to say hello and to those that purchased and/or donated to the Friends’ organization’s Greenhouse Water Tank Fund. Also many thanks to those that volunteered to work at the Friends table: Christine Ahia, Bonnie Burke, Suzanne Haight, Sunny LaPlante, Lisa & Kemele Lyon, Emily & Ron Needham, Mary Katherine & Paul Trevithick, Debbie, Justin & Jim Wiley and Lorri Ellison our organizer. By 1:30 PM we began to see blue sky and by 2:00 PM it turned into a beautiful sunny day. The nene nibbled grass and delighted visitors throughout the day then about 3:00 PM took flight, and we left shortly after, a bit closer to the aina. Past Events FWS Comprehensive Conservation Planning (CCP) This was the first in a series of meetings by Fish and
Wildlife Service where the public's concerns, observations, and ideas
regarding important refuge management issues were expressed. The
public's input was needed to help FWS identify and anlyze issues and
opportunities in a comprehensive manner as they develop a Comprehensive
Conservation Plan (CCP) and associated Environmental Assessment (EA) for
Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. Check back for date of the second public meeting regarding Comprehensive Conservation Planning for Hakalau Forest NWR Hakalau Forest Refuge Open House
